What is an Ariadne Journal?
The simple answer is--an Ariadne Journal is a personal art journal created using mixed media collage work.
The more complex answer is--an Ariadne Journal is a practice of active imagining, following your intuition, listening to your gut, and giving your soul a voice. The creation of the journal is a practice rather than an art or a craft.
In Greek myth, Ariadne was the daughter of King Minos and laid down the thread for the hero to find his way into and back out of the Labyrinth. She lays down the thread; we follow, down, in, to the center, and find our way back out into the world-- wiser for the journey.
Why engage in the practice of the Ariadne Journal?
Sitting in front of a blank page is one of the most terrifying acts one can encounter in daily life. Yet, it is the beginning of every creative act, including waking up in the morning and facing the blank canvas of the day. Working within the confines of a book, one page at a time, allows a person to face this fear without being overwhelmed by it. The practice of sitting with images and art materials without a plan and following the thread of intuition rather than reason becomes a practice of developing trust in something deeper, richer, and more mysterious than the conscious, cerebral mind. It becomes a practice of sitting with the Self, what Jung understood as the expression of "the unity of the personality as a whole." The practice of creating an Ariadne Journal lends courage for living an authentic life.
An Ariadne Journal workshop is a medley of slow, meditative sorting through images, colors, and textures and practical how-tos as you work with various media and tools to create layers, juxtapositions . . . stories of your soul in images and words.
Rest assured, you DO NOT have to be "an artist" to create rich, layered, "artistic" pages. Nor do you have to be an accomplished writer to craft wisdom words. Craft and Artistry are not the goals. Following Ariadne's Thread is the only thing you need to do. You will be amazed where it will lead you.
All workshops include a blank journal, all supplies and images, printed lists, poetry, music, and nourishment.
